THE DOOR IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR AN EXPANDED LEARNING TIME SUPERVISOR for our 2022 -2023 SCHOOL YEAR. THIS POSITION WILL SUPPORT THE ACADEMIC FELLOWS PROGRAM AT OUR PARTNER ORGANIZATION, BROOME STREET ACADEMY CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL.

Overview:

Broome Street Academy Charter High School (BSA) is a tuition-free public charter high school located in SoHo, educating students from all five boroughs, and devoted to providing students the necessary skills and support to graduate prepared for a successful future beyond high school. Our equitable, holistic, and student-centered approach will provide students with access to a rigorous, standards-based curriculum that will equip our graduates with the skills they need to make a positive impact on their communities and the broader world. Uniquely, BSA is the only charter school in the NYCDOE Community Schools portfolio because of our long-standing partnership with The Door, a revered non-profit organization celebrating 50 years of serving New York City’s young people in 2022. Our partnership allows us to serve the whole student and meet a variety of non-academic needs that clear the path for student learning.

We are an inclusive school community that values academic rigor, trauma informed practice, and student voice. Our Advanced Placement classes, athletics program, and extracurricular offerings give our students the full high school experience in a small, one-of-a-kind environment. Our admissions policy gives preference to siblings and students who are homeless, in foster care, or from low performing schools, though all students, regardless of their background, circumstance, race, gender or ethnicity are welcome, and encouraged to apply.

1. Position Title: Expanded Learning Time Supervisor for Academic Fellows
2. Role Purpose: The ELT Supervisor for Academic Fellows is member of Broome Street Academy Charter High School’s Administrative Team and reports to the Director Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Head of School. The Supervisor collaborates with the school leadership team and the Great Oaks Foundation to build and implement the BSA Academic Fellows Tutoring Program.

4. Principle Relationships: Leadership Team, Participating Teachers, Academic Fellows
5. Key Accountabilities: Establishing all schedules, systems and structures for a successful high dose tutoring program in this first year of implementation, strategic management of the day-to-day operations of the Fellowship, monitoring compliance of the AmeriCorps grant, and supervision of the AmeriCorps Fellows experience. If program the grows in year two, accountability for coordinating the execution of a successful Teacher Residency Program will be added.

Position Summary

The Academic Fellows Tutoring Program is a new addition to our academic program in the 2022-23 year. Through a partnership with The Great Oaks Foundation and AmeriCorps, BSA is welcoming 10 Academic Fellows into our community to provide high dosage tutoring in small groups or 1:1. The ELT Supervisor for Academic Fellows is a member of the school administration who will collaborate with the leadership team to build and implement the Academic Fellows Tutoring Program and a pipeline of resident teachers to Broome Street Academy. Because this is a new program, the ELT Supervisor for Academic Fellows has a unique opportunity to establish all schedules, systems and structures for a successful high dose tutoring program in this first year of implementation in a way that will be successful and sustainable in future years. In addition, the ELT Supervisor for Academic Fellows has ultimate responsibility for coordinating and managing the day-to-day operations of the Fellowship, monitoring compliance of the AmeriCorps grant, and supervising the AmeriCorps Fellows experience. If program the grows in year two, accountability for coordinating the execution of a successful Teacher Residency Program will be added. 

Responsibilities

Develop and implement the strategic vision and organizational structure that surrounds the Academic Fellows Program. 

Collaborate with the BSA leadership and the Great Oaks Foundation to ensure that Fellows are set up for success by:

• Collaborating with the BSA Leadership Team to establish and integrate the Academic Fellows into the school’s educational practices, ensuring alignment of all aspects of the Academic Fellows program with the school’s programs and goals.
• Overseeing management of the Academic Fellows schedules and responsibilities. Ensuring all have an appropriate balance of time spent working directly with students and time spent planning to work directly with students.
• Ensuring the success of the Academic Fellows in the 3 core areas of the Great Oaks Fellowship model:
• Instruct for Mastery – The Academic Fellowship, with its intense focus on individualized and small group instruction, changes education outcomes for students in partnership with high quality teaching. Small group instruction delivered in the context of a supportive relationship between students and AmeriCorps Academic Fellows will result in a significant increase in student math and ELA achievement.
• Mentor for Leadership – Academic Fellows have a fundamental role in supporting students in their social and emotional growth. Fellows encourage their students through coaching conversations to have personal investment in their success and to build an understanding that they have control over their lives. Fellows help empower our students to evolve into leaders.
• Help Develop a Community – Academic Fellows will help to develop Broome Street Academy into a positive, holistic community for students. As Academic Fellows, the AmeriCorps members will also develop as people and professionals. Academic Fellows stay in constant contact with families of students and may run or support enrichment opportunities for students and will develop into community leaders as the year progresses.
• Setting schedules and assigning student groupings. Ensuring that the Fellow to student ratio does not exceed 1:5 during tutorials.
• Oversee tutorials throughout the school day and be available to Fellows as needed.
• Monitor Academic Fellow participation in developing the community of the school: school transitions, after school, sports programming, and additional secondary roles and spaces.
• Collaborate with the Great Oaks Foundation to learn best practices and ensure continued positive development and implementation of the BSA program.
• Coordinate the quarterly reporting to the Broome Street Academy Head of School, CEO and Board of Trustees.

Oversee Academic Fellows professional development:

• Collaborate with BSA’s Head of School and Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as the Director of Program Implementation at Great Oaks Foundation to develop and lead orientation and onboarding training for AmeriCorps members focused on the Instruct for Mastery, Mentor for Leadership, and Help Develop a Community Framework.
• Collaborate with BSA’s Head of School and Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, as well as the Director of Program Implementation at Great Oaks Foundation to organize a yearlong scope and sequences for Fellow development
• Partner with the school leadership team to establish Fellow-teacher content meetings that support Fellows understanding of tutorial content as well as instructional and mentoring practices.
• Serve as conduit between Broome Street Academy and the Great Oaks Foundation to establish formal opportunities for Fellows to pursue a career as an educational professional. 

Lead AmeriCorps member experience and ensure 100% compliance of the AmeriCorps grant.

Supervise, coach, and develop Academic Fellows in completing their responsibilities:

• Track member hours and ensure that members are on track to complete necessary 1700 hours of service within the school year.
• Ensure the program is meeting its member enrollment and member retention goals as well as the student goals set forth in the grant.
• Oversee all performance measures for AmeriCorps members including: mid-year and end-of-year evaluations as well as supervising the on-boarding and exiting of members.
• Monitor AmeriCorps Member experience and successfully build a collaborative & positive Academic Fellow community.
• Ensure that Broome Street Academy is in compliance with regulations set forth by the terms of the AmeriCorps grant.
• Supervise, observe and give feedback to Academic Fellows on their day-to-day primary responsibilities to Instruct for Mastery and Mentor for Leadership.
• Supervise, observe and give feedback to Academic Fellows on their day-to-day secondary responsibilities to Help Develop a Community.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Familiarity with K-12 education
• Experience working with urban, underserved youth
• Previous management experience
• Previous teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience with tutoring or mentoring or teacher education
• Experience working with AmeriCorps
• Master’s degree in Education, Public Administration or relevant field experience
• Experience leading adults – through professional development, director supervision or coordination of key efforts

 Work Schedule: Full time, Monday – Friday, 40 hours a week

Salary: Commensurate with experience, plus a generous benefits package

For the convenience of faculty and families with students in public elementary and middle schools, BSA largely follows the NYCDOE school calendar, with a few limited modifications.

Please note: This is a Grant Funded position

While this is a position with The Door – A Center of Alternative, Inc., a 100% of the employees time will be dedicated to the Broom Street Academy Charter High School.
