The Costume Shop consists of a talented team of artisans who support Juilliard’s students in a professional atmosphere as they perform in a multitude of performances and projects across varied genres. 

The Costume Shop Supervisor manages the overall activities of the costume shop, focusing largely on productions, scheduling, and supplies. The Costume Shop Supervisor checks daily on the work being produced by the shop staff, and reports on and delegates the daily activities of the Costume Shop.

This is a full-time full year in person position. Work hours are Monday through Friday 9:00- 6:00 pm with occasional night and weekend calls. The salary range for this role is $73,000 – $74,500 annually.

Role Responsibilities:

  • In coordination with the Director of Costumes, manages and oversees a team of costume shop staff, per diem stitchers, craftspeople, and Costume Design Assistant Apprentices in the procurement, creation, alteration, and modification of all costume pieces for productions throughout the season.
  • Reports daily to the Director of Costumes on the progress, status, and needs of all current productions. 
  • Collaborates with the Design Coordinator in monitoring all rehearsal reports and confirming the fulfilment of rehearsal needs. Attends rehearsals, dress rehearsals, staff meetings, production meetings and wardrobe meetings as needed.
  • Organizes and distributes shop projects, maintaining individual show timelines. Schedules per diem employees and overtime for bi-weekly staff.
  • Monitors and instructs staff members, per diem employees, Costume Design Assistant Apprentices, and work study students in proper alteration and construction techniques, ensuring quality control.
  • Coordinates with the Drama, Dance, and Opera divisions to schedule all fittings for all productions, and maintain yearly up-to-date measurements.
  • Collaborates with the Design Coordinator in supervising the Costume Design Assistant Apprentices, including the daily review of individual show assignments, build timelines, rehearsal support, fitting schedules, outside vendor coordination, and workflow of the costume shop.
  • Attends review meetings and supports Apprentices’ portfolio development and career advancement. Assists in the yearly selection of Apprentices.
  • Supervises the execution and completion of alterations after each dress rehearsal within specified deadlines.
  • Works with the Design Coordinator and the Wardrobe Supervisor handling rented costumes, including documentation of alterations, restoration, cleaning, and timely return.
  • Works with the Director of Costumes to coordinate and implement maintenance schedules. Maintains all shop machinery, including hiring repair staff and instructing staff in equipment use. Maintains all supply stocks and adapts inventory systems as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Office and Business Manager and Wardrobe Supervisor to maintain safe working conditions via the Production Safety Committee, shop safety board, SDS and the first aid kit. Coordinates incidents reports with Office and Business Manager.
  • Coordinates building and physical plant maintenance and capital improvement requests as needed.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Three years’ experience in a professional costume shop. 
  • Experience in team leadership and training of staff.
  • Experience in the construction of costumes for opera, drama, and dance productions. 
  • Demonstrated ability in a wide range of clothing construction, craft techniques and alteration methods.
  • Proficient abilities in operating industrial and domestic sewing machines and sergers, and hand sewing skills.
  • Strong knowledge of costume history, period and sizing.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Able to work nights and weekends.

Preferred Background:

  • Experience working in an educational institution.
