The General Manager oversees all operational, staffing, and customer service requirements of The Juilliard Store, while ensuring all elements of The Juilliard Store are aligned with The Juilliard School mission. This position reports to the Associate Director of Retail Operations and Innovation.

this role is fully in person. The salary range for this role is $70,000-$80,000.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Leads hiring, training, and managing of all personnel. Analyzes division of labor, and creates weekly work schedule, allocating staff resources to accomplish store projects and achieve goals in collaboration with the Associate Director of Retail Operations and Innovation.
  • Works closely with Associate Director to establish merchandising and visual strategy for all products.
  • Trains staff and models exemplary customer service, restocking and merchandising practices
  • Manages ecommerce and POS operations, including content & product editing in alignment with Public Affairs requirements
  • Sets goals for store staff, shares results, and provides suggestions for improvement on a regular basis.
  • Works with Associate Director of Retail Operations and Innovation in overall strategic management, including marketing efforts and communications (online and in store)
  • Leads weekly team meetings with important procedural changes, reminders, discussions and announcements ensuring team is united
  • Ensures store staff promptly and accurately places/faces received merchandise on the sales floor and/or backstock areas in accordance with receiving procedures. 
  • Acts as an authorized signer for store inventory and expense invoices as needed. 
  • Records and maintains petty cash expenses, and makes weekly deposits to bank.
  • Submits weekly payroll for part-time employees and work-study student timesheets. 
  • Assists with ecommerce fulfillment when needed, along with the Shipping and Receiving Manager and Assistant Store Managers to ensure all orders are processed in a timely matter. 
  • Supports Associate Director in implementing procedures to ensure all financial goals are met including sales, inventory and shrinkage control, and expense management.
  • Provides feedback to Associate Director on customer/staff comments and requests. 
  • Researches new products, vendors, and product lines 
  • Places reorders for branded merchandise, musical supplies, and general merchandise.
  • Accurately maintains retail system data including store opening/closing processes, pricing, promotional and staff discounts, department charges, and monthly reporting.
  • Maintains adequate inventory level of all supplies (Packing materials, bags, price labels, etc.).
  • Ensures all sales data, sales tax payments and tender are reconciled monthly/quarterly.
  • Acts as the key liaison for fulfillment of Juilliard staff and faculty educational material requirements and other internal requests.
  • Works with IT, Public Safety and Juilliard Facilities teams to maintain a safe and welcoming environment, communicating and posting about closures in advance. 
  • Establishes and implements operational procedures for on-site and off-site events
  • Manages Pop-up shops as needed  

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5 years in retail store leadership experience, preferably a store with a combination of books, sheet music/scores, apparel, and general merchandise
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in music required, with an interest in all the performing arts
  • Thorough understating of standard retail terminology, business practices and mathematics
  • Highly efficient in all aspects of retail operational procedures and POS/Inventory Management systems
  • Ability to establish and ensure customer service standards are in place at all times
  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to creating an environment that is inclusive, supportive, equitable, and welcoming. 
  • Charismatic leader with strong ability to encourage team work and collaboration amongst staff
  • General understanding of standard retail industry buying and financial planning practices
  • Flare for creative product presentation and overall awareness of trends in market place
  • Manager will be involved in setting and restocking floor, which involves lifting boxes and/or moving floor fixtures and products, therefore the ability to lift at least 20 lbs will be required. The ability to stand, bend, and reach will also be required. The frequency will depend on the needs of the store. 

 

Preferred Background:

  • College or National bookstore management
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in music
