Reports to: Director of Community Advancement

Classification: Full-Time | Exempt 

Salary & Benefits: $65,000 to $75,000. Schedule: Generally Monday through Friday. Work days and hours may shift depending on scheduling needs; typical schedule will be 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; flexibility required.

Summary: The Youth Leadership & Education Manager is responsible for providing management of a spectrum of youth oriented services at The Center. The Manager works closely with the Director of Community Advancement in the development of ongoing programs and services provided by the Center’s Community Advancement’s team. The Manager has oversight of the contracts funding Youth Leadership and Engagement services, including program work plans, fiscal goals, and grant work plans. These services seek to improve: economic and educational attainment of LGBTQ youth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Youth Leadership and Education team members and functions as part of the Center Advancement team.  
  • Develop and coordinate programming to advance educational achievement and goals of LGBTQ and allied youth through the creation and implementation of programming and curricula that promote academic skills development. 
  • Oversee and facilitate individual educational counseling support and other academic enrichment efforts including partnering with youth participants on successful transitions to high schools, high school equivalency programs and colleges.
  • Oversee regular clinical review of all client and programmatic files, including ongoing attendance records, staff logs, evaluation components, and progress reports for all direct service work, including all relevant data entry.
  • Provide the Director of Community Advancement with ongoing reports related to direct service work and supervisory duties and complete all grant reporting, audit preparation and response, and budgetary duties.
  • Outreach to and partner with the Department of Education and community schools to provide information on Center resources for youth and provide training, counseling and referrals to school staff.
  • Maintain familiarity with current policy issues impacting LGBTQ youth, engage in advocacy initiatives that work to enhance the educational environment for LGBT young people within NYC public schools and offer youth skills to address issues if they are identified as areas of concern.
  • Administer the Center Youth Program scholarships including their development, promotion, selection, and award process in collaboration with the Director of Community Advancement.
  • Provide youth with individual crisis-intervention, assessment, referral services, educational, employment, and mental health support and manage the provision of these services by the team.
  • Work with staff, interns, and youth leaders on the annual calendar of youth community events and summer programming, enroll youth in program services, groups, and training programs  
  • Manage the implementation of peer education youth leadership programming that provides training for youth to serve as educators to their peers, both internally and in community settings.
  • Support the coordination of the Center Youth Leadership Camp and serve as staff advisor to the Family Group Leaders throughout the camp process and the culminating week-long residential Camp Program. 
  • Provide direct supervision to the Youth Leadership and Engagement team to support the service-learning and youth employment programming, and supervise a Master’s level Social Work intern. 
  • Provide cross coverage for all other Center Advancement program team tasks, duties and populations as needed.
  • Submit finance documentation including disbursements and purchase orders related to internship stipends, scholarship awards, food and materials for programs and events
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in a related field preferred or equivalent, transferable life and professional experience;
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of supervisory experience;
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of previous experience and demonstrated ability and aptitude in academic enrichment and educational development;
  • Bilingual or multilingual, a plus. Language preferences: Spanish, Bengali, Russian, and/or French-Creole;
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience working with LGBTQ+, TGNC, POC, and Immigrant populations, including knowledge of the spectrum of gender identity, transgender issues, immigration, and POC issues; 
  • Strong leadership development skills;
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills;
  • Good written/verbal communication skills; 
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of workstyles and cultural backgrounds;
  • Commitment to inclusive, multicultural programming; prior experience working within coalitions with diverse communities and an understanding of intersectional oppressions.
  • Thoughtful and articulate analysis on the structural and institutional racism and bias and the spectrum of gender identity and bias, in consideration of the impacts and outcomes in the decision-making process throughout the department or program and on underserved and historically oppressed communities;
  • A strong commitment to social justice and the mission of The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center;

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement:

The Center is subject to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Commissioner’s Order requiring COVID-19 Vaccination for Staff in Residential and Congregate Settings from New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The Center is required to comply with this order because we have a number of contracts with New York City.

All current and new staff must either provide a one-time verification that they are fully vaccinated with either a single-dose of an FDA- or WHO-approved one-dose COVID-19 vaccine or the second dose of an FDA- or WHO-approved two-dose vaccine.
