Overview
The Producer, Public Programming, reports to the Director, Education and Public Programming, and is responsible for co-conceiving, planning, and producing the Met’s public programming activities, both at the Metropolitan Opera House and with a broad range of external partners.
Primary Responsibilities:
- To deliver an annual schedule of public programming that supports the Met’s audience development and DEI goals, including growing and diversifying the audience for opera.
- To conceptualize and produce the Met’s public programming both at Lincoln Center and with outside venues (e.g., Guggenheim Museum, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library, Brooklyn Library, Lincoln Center, etc.), collaborating with external partners on programs related to the Met’s mainstage operas and offerings.
- To produce a series of talks in consultation with the Met’s Marketing and Development teams, including season previews, new production talks and Under 40s events.
- To manage the Met’s internal team who produce the audience engagement and outreach program, including members of the Marketing, Editorial, Education, and DEI teams, plus outside consultants.
- To plan, budget, and produce the annual Summer Recital Series in NYC parks (June/July).
- To plan, budget, and produce the annual Summer HD Festival on the Lincoln Center Plaza (August).
- Coordination of open dress rehearsals, coordinating logistics with multiple departments, including Education, as well as the Metropolitan Opera Guild.
- Coordination of front-of-house program for public access during non-performance hours.
- Coordination of Met backstage tours in liaison with the Guild, Lincoln Center and the Met’s Development team.
- To manage cross-departmental communication for outreach events and audience development initiatives involving the Production, Marketing, and Artistic departments.
Skills & Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in public engagement programming and production within an arts environment.
- Experience of developing and managing a complex schedule of public talks and events.
- Experience in contract negotiations and budget management.
- Strong proven track record of attracting broad and diverse audiences for public events.
- Experience of creating and developing audience outreach programs in partnership with external partners.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including artists.
- Superior communication skills.
- Excellent organizational abilities.
Physical Demands:
- The Metropolitan Opera is a performance venue that requires employees working in the building to have obtained a primary series of a COVID-19 vaccine considered effective by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) and/or the World Health Organization (“WHO”) at least two weeks prior to coming onsite to the Met.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and to handle many different projects simultaneously.
- Flexible schedule to accommodate work in the evenings and on weekends during the opera season.
- Ability to maintain good humor and grace in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and projects and to work both independently and collaboratively.
