Job Description

The Water Quality Improvement Coordinator (WQIC) will assist Long Island homeowners in replacing their septic systems and cesspools with nitrogen-removing systems that meet the best available technology standards with a focus along the north shore of Nassau County. This is an 18-month contract position with the potential to extend the contract. The WQIC will focus on expediting local, state, and county funding sources for modernizing existing on-site wastewater infrastructure, such as Nassau County’s Septic Improvement Program (SIP). The WQIC will focus on areas that have been identified as high priorities for nutrient abatement to restore water quality.

The WQIC will engage directly with homeowners who live in high-priority areas and where local governments have funding sources in place to modernize on-site wastewater systems. He/she will

work in tandem with partners to:

  • Create and assist New York Counties in developing effective replicable SIPs that

grows from what we learned from Nassau County’s program.

  • Community outreach and education to homeowners and small business owners about the

benefits of clean water septic technology.

  • Assist SIP applicants through all stages of clean water septic system acquisition from application to installation.

Job Responsibilities

·        Community outreach and education regarding grant programs to modernize on-site wastewater infrastructure.

·        Assist homeowners with the grant application process.

·        Assist homeowners in identifying and coordinating with qualified professionals to

install nitrogen-removing septic systems on their properties.

·        Work with counties and local jurisdictions to expedite permitting approval process

for installing nitrogen-removing septic systems.

·        Explore methods to make it easier for homeowners to modernize on-site wastewater systems.

·        Identify value-creation opportunities or efficiencies that can be made in the nitrogen-removing septic system marketplace.

Job Qualifications

· 5 years of experience working in communications, construction management as a general contractor, environmental services, administering grants to homeowners for environmental improvements or related work experience

·        Strong personal planning and time management skills

·        Ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

·        Proficiency in Spanish desired

·        A valid driver’s license, use of car for work and automobile insurance are mandatory requirements for employment in this role.

·        Willingness and ability to travel throughout Long Island, New York

·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·        Advanced degree in urban planning, environmental policy, management, sciences, urban

planning or equivalent professional experience

·        Professional experience in the field of environmental services preferred.

Annual Salary $75K-$85K commensurate with experience

Health insurance for an individual is included, plus three weeks of paid vacation.

This position is term-limited and contingent upon funding from non-profit and government entities. When grant funding expires, the position ends.
