Overview

Worker’s Justice Project (WJP) (workersjustice.org) was founded in 2010 to address the racial and economic injustices that low-wage immigrant workers face in New York City by building collective power to win institutional change. WJP, a fiscally sponsored project of Third Sector New England (tsne.org), runs two long-standing worker’s centers in Brooklyn. We promote justice and opportunity for low-wage immigrant workers in New York City by pushing for systematic enforcement and expansion of workplace protections, which include labor and occupational health and safety standards while advocating for industry-specific efforts to improve working conditions. WJP also offers skills-building training to workers in health & safety and industry-specific areas, and we educate immigrant communities about their rights in the workplace and how to exercise those rights.

Responsibilities

The Construction Business & Employer Services Representative works from WJP’s Sunset Park, assigned to the Construction Division. The Construction Business & Employer Services Representative contributes to strengthening and expanding WJP membership and significantly contributes to long-term, well-paying, sustainable employment opportunities for Construction members . The ideal candidate will not only align themselves with WJP’s vision and mission but will have outreach experience as a volunteer or paid experience. Administrative understanding of processes and will follow through to the last detail. The Construction Business & Employer Services Representative is a key thought partner in shaping WJP’s overall organizational development strategy and vision.

The Business & Employer Services Representative is required to work on-site and regularly on evenings and weekends. The work performed is deemed Essential. The Outreach Worker is responsible for ensuring that activities are conducted professionally, in a culturally sensitive manner, and in alignment with the organizational mission. Compliance with WJP, NY state and NY city COVID-19 safety protocols and requirements is mandatory.

Essential Functions

  • Cultivate relationships with current and prospective employers, and stakeholders, including BIDS, business councils, community groups, and more;
  • Envision, develop, and implement a strategic plan for employment placement services;
  • Conduct reviews of existing business partnerships regularly, and determine improvements and ways to leverage relationships with employers;
  • Research, conduct outreach to, and build relationships with prospective employers willing to hire Construction members;
  • Schedule and conduct daily prospecting, cold calls, and face-to-face meetings;
  • Serve as the liaison among employers and members;
  • Works closely with Construction Division Director and the Construction team to screen and match members with employment opportunities;
  • With collaboration of the Construction Director assess, place and assign Construction members to jobs;
  • Build effective relationships with potential and current employers;
  • Generate leads by exchanging and collecting information from individuals whom they come in contact with;
  • Create and facilitate presentations to inform potential employers of Construction’s services;
  • Facilitate and train Construction members in current and prospective employers needs and requirements;
  • In conjunction with Construction Division Director and Communications Associate, develop a marketing plan that promotes Construction across different networks that generates employment for members;
  • Review job requests from employers made through the online portal, emails, calls, and in-person;
  • Conduct quality checks on jobs, working with Construction Members Services Representative to strengthen and improve members’ skills;
  • Issue invoices and employer notifications;
  • Track outreach efforts for required program reports;
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and new developments, share information with Construction division;
  • Assists in completing other program goals and requirements, such as answering phone calls and greeting visitors in the office;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Information and Work Schedule

This is a temporary, full-time (37.5 hours/week); exempt position. The position will require working some early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends as needed and will travel periodically once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Qualifications

  • A commitment to WJP’s mission, vision, and values and our workers and worker justice;
  • Knowledge of construction industry or willing to learn;
  • Proficiency knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and other applications (Google Apps.) and equipment operation such as copiers, scanners, fax machines and telephones;
  • Administrative and organizational skills necessary to carry out the job description responsibilities;
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills in English and Spanish;
  • Strong meeting facilitation skills;
  • Knowledge of NYC public transportation system;
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities at the same time;
  • Dedication and ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends as needed.
  • Ability to travel occassionally, including travel on public transportation.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • Handle, or feel objects, tools or controls;

  • Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • Able to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions;
  • Able to commute using the NYC public transportation system;
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;

  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.
  • Able to work in an open office space.

Regarding COVID-19: TSNE considers the health and safety of our employees of the utmost importance, and due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and subject to your state and local laws, our policy requires that all employees performing in-person work at a TSNE designated office are fully vaccinated. For the purpose of this policy, fully vaccinated indicates that you have received a single dose of the Janssen vaccine, or both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Certain exemptions may be requested and will be considered by Human Resources.

Compensation and Benefits

Location: Work will be primarily performed at the Sunset Part Worker Center/Hub-4112 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11232

Compensation: The salary for this position is $56,500/yr.
