Position Summary:

The Community Mobilizer, Volunteerism and UJA Brooklyn, is an opportunity for a creative, entrepreneurial, out of the box thinker who is excited to bring new ideas to these two dynamic portfolios and see them through to execution. The Community Mobilizers work with community members and organizational leaders to address needs in local Jewish communities and beyond.

The Mobilizer will focus on 1) developing and implementing new and ongoing community volunteerism strategies and programs across NYC, Westchester, and Long Island and 2) mobilizing Brooklyn organizations and community members to identify and address unmet needs and opportunities to strengthen the Brooklyn Jewish community. 

UJA Brooklyn

The Jewish community in Brooklyn is innovative, diverse, entrepreneurial and dynamic – and this role is an exciting opportunity for someone who meets that description as well to work locally with this community.

The Mobilizer will work closely with the Executive Director, Community Mobilizers and UJA Brooklyn to develop convenings, grants or programs to support the Brooklyn Jewish community. This includes cultivating strong relationships with local stakeholders (including synagogues, schools, agencies, grassroots initiatives and community members), leveraging UJA resources locally, and designing new initiatives to meet needs.

Volunteerism

The Mobilizer is the lead professional responsible for bringing innovations to UJA’s community volunteerism strategies. This person is responsible for creating, developing, and implementing various community volunteerism programs. This includes identifying meaningful experiences, connecting with organizations and volunteers, identifying strategic grant making or UJA-led solutions, and creating the systems and processes needed to move these individual projects. Programs include, but are not limited to, community-wide days of service, during and post-crisis volunteer mobilization efforts and ongoing volunteerism efforts.

Major Responsibilities:

UJA Brooklyn

  • Develop relationships with local stakeholders, including synagogues, schools, JCCs, agencies, grassroots initiatives and community members.
  • Convene roundtables of key sectors and organizations in the community to foster ongoing collaborations and implement community solutions.
  • Respond to local needs on the ground with new programmatic and grant funded initiatives, including developing and implementing localized strategies and programs to support communal needs.
  • Serve as an external UJA representative in Brooklyn communities, attending community events and meeting with professionals spearheading programing for the Jewish community.
  • Co-lead Advisory Council, engaging chair and volunteer council members in designing the work.

 

Community Volunteerism

  • Redesign and implement UJA’s strategy to utilize volunteerism as a community building tool locally across NYC, Westchester and Long Island
  • Implement UJA-Federation’s large-scale days of service (1-3/year, including MLK Day) and facilitate a cross-organizational professional team involved with the implementation. This includes strategic grant making, collaborating with fundraising and marketing colleagues on recruitment, and working with IT on systems and tracking.
  • Utilize grant making to advance meaningful volunteer experiences. This includes writing requests for applications, overseeing the selection of grantees and managing relationships with them to ensure the success of funded projects.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to mobilize the NY Jewish community through volunteerism in the wake of or immediately following a crisis.

 

 Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Five+ years of project /program coordination/ implementation experience; volunteer mobilization; or planning/community organizing/community development, or other relevant experiences.
  • Familiarity with the general makeup of the New York Jewish community, and in Brooklyn specifically. Candidates who live in Brooklyn are strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and with cultural sensitivity with various stakeholders, including internal and external colleagues, community Rabbis, community educators, people from a variety of different Jewish/religious/ethnic backgrounds, people at various life stages, various socioeconomic backgrounds etc.
  • Self-starter, with ability to find and develop opportunities without a clear road map, who is comfortable balancing a start-up type environment and more legacy environment.
  • Ability to lead project teams effectively, including building buy in and using processes that bring others along with you.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills. Effectively presents ideas to individuals or groups.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills. Can work collaboratively or alone.
  • Able to identify opportunities and take action to build strategic relationships.

 

Salary Information:

The salary range for this role is $76,000 – $80,000; commensurate with experience and qualifications listed above.
