Position: Early Intervention College Prep Counselor, TRIO Talent Search 

Department: Youth Services – College Readiness Program 

Reports to: Deputy Director of Elementary and Middle School Programs

Hours:  35 hours a week 

Salary:  $50,000

FLSA:  Non-exempt 

The Early Intervention College Prep Counselor provides academic, personal, financial, and career counseling to low-income, first-generation, and academically disadvantaged middle school students. This is a full-time, 12-month position funded by a five-year U.S. Department of Education grant. Most of the time will be spent working independently on-site at 4-6 East Harlem middle schools. 

 

We seek an Early Intervention College Prep Counselor to lead the middle school initiative. The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader skilled at building community and school partnerships, with extensive experience in NYC’s high school enrollment process, higher education background, pathways to college, and career exploration. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Understand and maintain all requirements set by Talent Search TRIO
  • Coordinates and conducts recruitment strategies, accepts referrals and helps select Talent Search participants
  • Makes presentations to school personnel, students, and parents outlining program benefits
  • Meets one-on-one with students and families to discuss academic and non-academic obstacles as they relate to student progress, involvement, and program satisfaction
  • Maintain a caseload of 125 students and complete individual needs assessments to develop customized, individual College, Career, and Academic Plans (CCAPs); review and interpret report cards, transcripts, and test scores.
  • Prepare lesson plans to provide weekly age and stage-appropriate college readiness workshops at a minimum of 4-6 partner school sites. 
  • Coordinates and makes referrals to tutorial services and develops study skills workshops with input from teachers and other school staff 
  • Monitors attendance and disciplinary records for continued program eligibility and resource intervention 
  • Develops student assessments and completes program evaluations
  • Partners with local high schools, college departments, and community constituents for effective program delivery, workshops, etc.
  • Coordinates and leads student-centered college and university exploratory field trips, enrichment activities, and cultural events
  • Participates in middle and high school staff and team meetings to review timelines, discuss objectives, refine implementation plans, and problem-solve
  • Receives confidential application materials and maintains participant files, tracks services, and submits weekly contact forms and other reports as required by the grant
  • Participates in professional development activities appropriate to the functions of the position, including state TRIO Talent Search meetings/conferences, Department of Education sponsored training, and school district trainings
  • Facilitate leadership and community service activities for middle school students.
  • Maintain program calendar, and create flyers and announcements.  
  • Create and facilitate youth development events, meetings, and activities for participants.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the College Readiness Director, Deputy Director, and Director of Youth Services

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution in Youth Studies, Education, Administration, Counseling, or a related field and; two years of experience counseling/advising youth; or
  • Associate’s degree in Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation or a related field and 2-4 years of experience working with federal Department of Education programs or TRIO Programs. 
  • Ability to work independently with limited oversight
  • Experience working with individuals who are low-income and first-generation
  • Knowledge of NYC’s High School admissions process and college and university admissions, and enrollment procedures
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial aid procedures
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and Student Access database management preferred. 
  • Work experience in a middle school, high school, or college setting
  • Ability to work one or two Saturdays per month, as needed. 
  • Candidates must complete successful background, criminal records, fingerprinting, and reference checks. 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
